August 13-17, 2018: Sea Grant Graduate Research Scholars Coastal Immersion
Our graduate students, Olivia LaHaye, Meredith Guidry, and Hamid Aboueshagh participated in the Graduate Research Scholars Coastal Immersion program organized by Louisiana Sea Grant during the Summer of 2018. This program provides the students with essential science communication training to help raise awareness of their efforts for protecting the coast and its communities. More information about this program can be found here.

2019 EPA Campus RainWorks Challenge -
The Ripple Effect The UL Office of Sustainability collaborated on the EPA Campus Rain Works Challenge Student Design Competition, a stormwater management competition for universities across the nation, to submit a Stormwater Masterplan that applies the use of green infrastructure onto campus for the mitigation of excess rainwater runoff. Our Sea Grant ASR project team took this opportunity to propose the implementation of an ASR facility in combination with a retention pond to be located on UL campus. The addition of this facility could bring awareness through its educative and inspirative experience for the students and public to learn about holistic water mitigation strategies. The ASR facility would clean and recharge excess stormwater into the aquifer while simultaneously benefiting the university through a water banking strategy that aids the HVAC chillers located on campus and can be used to maintain water levels in the on-campus swamp.
On April 22, 2019, it was announced that our UL team received the award for 1st Place Master Plan. We are proud to have been able to contribute in this grand effort for UL campus that is now being shared with the world. You can read about the contributions of our students in the following article links and also watch the Ripple Effect project video. April 2019: Sea Grant Coastal Connections
Coastal Connections is a research communication competition, challenging students to present their coastal research topic and consolidate their work and its significance into a three minute discussion using up to two slides. Our students, Meredith Guidry and Olivia LaHaye have participated in the competition. Meredith's presentation introduced our ASR research study and our contribution in the EPA Campus RainWorks Challenge, and Olivia discussed the sustainability of ASR for our state and the results of our completed regional analysis for the feasibility study. More information about the Coastal Connections event can be found here.

August 12-13 2019: Texas ASR Site Visits
Graduate research assistants Olivia LaHaye and Meredith Guidry conducted a site visit trip to two active ASR projects in Texas: the San Antonio Water System (SAWS) and the City of Kerrville. They learned about the differences and challenges communities face when integrating ASR wells with groundwater or surface water-based distribution systems. This trip has also helped in creating visuals for our conceptual design that we plan to use in our outreach and education efforts. We hope to carry this information forward when exploring and designing alternative options for how to integrate ASR as a water management strategy in southwest Louisiana and how to share our vision with stakeholders and farmers as our feasibility study moves forward.
